Starship and Super Heavy Orbital Test Animation

30 000 Vaatamised 583 tuh

With suborbital Starship tests seemingly complete with SN15's successful landing, all eyes are on the first orbital test flight of a full Starship-Super Heavy stack. This test, scheduled to take place only in a few month's time, will feature the world's tallest and most powerful rocket ever built taking flight for the first time. This animation shows the proposed flight plan of that first orbital test flight.

NOTE: Some aspects of this animation are inaccurate or out of date. During the production many new pieces of information were revealed that weren't known at the time certain scenes were animated.

the risk with doing this kind of animation works, is that at the speed spaceX is going now, they could launch the real thing before the animation is even rendered

Watching this animation I could imagine myself being onboard the Starship 10 years in the future and landing on a converted oil platform close offshore to the big island of Hawaii instead of landing in the ocean. The time is coming. I'm 76 so just hope I live long enough to take one of those point to point "hops". I would happily do it without the slightest hesitation 🥳.

Elon Musk: Yes! We have successfully tested our orbital flight and both parts of the rocket landed safely back down. Passengers onboard: Well yes we did it. Now that we’ve landed in the middle of the ocean, about that whole thing about taking us back home with a ship… Elon Musk: Yep, you guys did an amazing job all of you. Passengers onboard: Couldn’t have done it without the team. Now about that ship that was supposed to arrive here and- Elon Musk: Definitely well done, now if you will excuse me, I’ll need to focus on reevaluating Boca Chica entirely. Also your families will remember you. Good luck surviving in the ocean. Passengers: onboard. We’re F***ED!

Starship is too large for any current drone ships, so they’d have to spend millions making new larger ones, which could take years. And since starship will return to the launch site after every launch eventually, itd be easier and cheaper to just throw one or two away.

@Zenn Labs They only need to land in the water like this probably one time, at most a couple more if they have issues during reentry, both will eventually always return to the launch site so there’s no point wasting millions of dollars and lots of development time to make new drone ships that will only be used a few times.

@Tushar Chaudhary They’re only landing on water for the first orbital attempt so that if anything goes wrong they won’t blow it up near any populated areas. Doing this more than once would use up pretty much every engine they have, so they’re probably going to only do this once if they can.

On a heavy gravity planet like Earth, that is a huge velocity accel plunging into with a dive, of a pure bare wing free body and only fins to air navigate, the booster on effect would need to be on much earlier then estimated on Mars. The Heavy BN did most of the heavy but easly task of shooting the SN vessel out of the first heavy grav & thick atmospheres, BN cgi looked like it never exceeded the re-entry burn burden.
