There have been many spaceships over the years but the best one made so far has to be SpaceX’s Starship. Why is it so great, however?

Starship Overview
It all started back in October of 2001. Elon Musk went to Russia and wanted to buy old decommissioned missiles in the hopes of making them into rockets for going to Mars someday. This was before Musk’s SpaceX existed and had achieved all its successes it has today so Musk simply looked crazy to Russia. They turned him down and he instead founded SpaceX and began building rockets for a fraction of the price. After a number of prototypes and designs, the company began testing Starship prototypes in January of 2020. The first four of these tests resulted in explosions but each one achieved new milestones in the spacecraft’s development. Now SpaceX is scheduled to work towards conducting an orbital Starship flight by July of this year. Starship is launched into orbit by a massive rocket called the Superheavy--more on that later--and when combined, this two-stage rocket will measure 120 meters in height and will be the world’s most powerful launch vehicle ever developed, period.

The Construction of Starship
One huge element of Starship is that it uses stainless steel in its rockets instead of aluminum. A big question that gets raised is why SpaceX chose to use stainless steel. Aluminum is both lighter and cheaper to send to space, but one big element is assisted by stainless steel. That thing is temperature tolerance.

Starship wants to be an interplanetary vehicle and this means it’ll need to be able to stand freezing and hot temperates when it ascends and descends into planetary atmospheres multiple times. As it turns out, this is where stainless steel shines, as it has a particularly good tolerance to temperature varieties that many other materials can’t compete with. This temperature tolerance is the key to going to Mars and wouldn’t be achievable with aluminum.

When Starship enters Mars’ incredibly thin atmosphere, it will do so in such a way that the amount of drag is increased to slow the vehicle down as it falls. With drag comes heat and SpaceX aims to cool Starship’s descent with a liquid methane pump underneath the Starship’s surface, which will essentially fight back against the heat similar to how humans sweat hot temperatures. This stainless steel and the technology paired with it is just astonishing and a major aspect of the construction that illustrates why Starship is so incredible. Things that could only be dreamed of a couple of decades ago now are in actual operation and have been tested to confirm they function properly!

Another amazing aspect of Starship is how the rockets are reusable. A major reason rockets can be so expensive is their lack of reusability. For decades rockets were something that was used once to launch ships into space. SpaceX set out with a focus on reusability which creates affordability. If a rocket can be reused multiple times it becomes a great deal more cost-effective. The raptor rockets are all reusable and this allows Superheavy and Starship to be used as many times as could be needed, saving a lot of money and being more environmentally friendly. These reusable ships don’t have much of a downtime either. It is possible for a Starship to launch, the reusable superheavy to return to Earth, and then after about an hour of getting it prepped and refueled it will be ready to yet again take another Starship into orbit!

Inside Starship
As for what exactly is inside Starship that makes it well-designed, the part of Starship that can fit humans sits atop that rocket known as Superheavy. The starship body has at its back six Raptor engines--a technology developed by SpaceX. Their combustion happens in differing stages, and the engine's design reduces the amount of propellant that's wasted. The middle of Starship has propellant tanks that feed liquid methane (CH4) and liquid oxygen (O2) to the Raptors. The very front of Starship AKA the upper stage, has the payload compartment. This is where many people or a large amount of cargo can be put.

Below the main body of Starship is the Superheavy we mentioned. It lives up to its name with around 28 Raptor engines. It is the most powerful rocket ever and uses the same technology to propel itself into space.

Grand ideas from the visionary Elon Musk. Someone has to do, so why not Space X and Elon? His Starship designs look great. Visiting Mars is a good idea, but it is worth it to colonize in larger numbers, what is gained? And how many months is the trip to Mars?

Why not make a giant space ship to go from planet to planet, and a small lander to ferry people and cargo to the planet surface? I have asked this question 8,000,000 times and have yet to hear anyone even try to explain it to me.

    1. greg55666
      greg55666
      Päev tagasi

@Nicolaj Mikkelsen "We don't have lander"? What are you, a moon landing denialist? Did you not see both Jeff Bezos and Richard Branson go to space and come back in one week? If you answered it, I didn't see it. Please be specific one more time, and I promise I'll read it. Here is what I hear you saying: Gigantic ship that has to also be engineered to go through space for six months--that one we can double engineer to also land on the surface of Mars. But send up a separate ship that is designed specifically for landing--that we can't do. You're saying the reason the rocket ship that lands on Mars has to be so gigantic is because it's going to be going through the atmosphere at insane speed--that's something smaller ships can't do? Did you mention that to Curiosity, a lander the size of a car that is on Mars right now? You're not answering the question. (Unless the answer is in the two words "pay load" and I didn't see it.)

    2. Nicolaj Mikkelsen
      Nicolaj Mikkelsen
      2 päeva tagasi

@greg55666 I already answered that. Pay load. Plus we don’t have “lander” this is not Star Trek. It will no matter what have to go through the same atmosphere with an insane speed. Going to the moon is one thing, low gravity and no atmosphere. But Mars? Whol other business.

    3. greg55666
      greg55666
      2 päeva tagasi

@Nicolaj Mikkelsen I'm not asking about rocket delta v or orbital mechanics or refueling. I'm asking about SpaceX. The SpaceX design is to fly to Mars on a large rocket and LAND ON THE SURFACE WITH THAT SAME ROCKET. My question is: WHY. Why not fly the rocket to Mars, park it in orbit, and land on a lander? Why not fly to the moon, park the rocket in orbit, and land on a lander? What is the logic behind going to the surface of the planet with the same ship that you had to design to be able to fly all the way from Earth to Mars? Why not build one rocket that is designed specifically for the trip from Earth to Mars, and another ship--a lander--to ferry people and cargo to and from the surface?

    4. Nicolaj Mikkelsen
      Nicolaj Mikkelsen
      2 päeva tagasi

@greg55666 you still need rockets that Can get you there with enough pay load for it being worth it. Of which we don’t. I’m actually writing a book about this topic, well, in a way. It’s about a self sustained moon station of which we will get resources from by mining the moon, and then building a ship/station in orbit with those materials of which we then use as a refueling/rest stop before longer space expeditions, then doing the same with other moons. Plus adding a kind of “sling-shot” that use the momentum of the orbit around the moon, to give spaceships more speed from the get go without having to use fuel as much as possible. And then rinse and repeat, until we get to other planets and moons of which we can collect resources.

    5. greg55666
      greg55666
      2 päeva tagasi

@Nicolaj Mikkelsen I'm sorry, you completely misunderstood my question. I'm not asking about 1km long spaceships. I'm asking why SpaceX is making an entire giant rocket--Starship--to take off from earth and land on the Moon/Mars, and then take off again to return home. Why don't they build the Starship in orbit around Earth, then LEAVE IT in Earth orbit, then go up and down to the surface in a small lander: THE WAY IT'S BEEN DONE FOR 60 YEARS. I'm asking you to explain the existing Starship design, I'm not fantasizing about the USS Enterprise. Why doesn't Starship just go to Moon/Mars orbit, then have a lander to ferry cargo/people to the surface. Your answer here is basically exactly the question I'm asking about Starship. Given everything you say here, why the hell are they having Starship take off/land rather than a small lander? I'm asking someone to explain the existing reasoning AT SPACEX, not why a fantasy even larger ship wouldn't be even better.

The starship rocket runs on methane and oxygen making CO2 and water vapour only. It’s extremely clean. The only by product of note is CO2 and even that is negligible compared to even a single jumbo jet flight, especially if you consider the fact that SoaceX are creating the infrastructure to make that fuel using CO2 from the air + water + electricity. It could easily be a carbon neutral fuel cycle. When you come to consider them flying into space or Mars, it could actually become carbon negative in time. If you want to think about pollution, modern rockets aren’t it.

Climate change is bullshit. Made up by the deep state. You are all worshipping Elon Musk. He can't save anything, much less mankind. Carbon is a byproduct of respiration in all mammals. Photosynthesis uses CO2 and makes plants grow and puts out oxygen. If you increase CO2 in the atmosphere it greens earth. Self healing. Self normalizing. By design. So when did we decide carbon was bad? Every living thing on earth has carbon in at the celuular level. How can that be bad? All life on earth is by design. With a design, there's a designer. Mars won't save earth. It's not an insurance policy for life on earth. It's the deep state liars and their actions that are harming the earth. Mankind living on earth is not the problem. And there is nothing on Mars. Except CO2. No life. We can extract oxygen from CO2 but it takes hydrogen in the form of hydrazine rocket fuel. It works. So we can take water with us but it's not enough water to do anything with. The cost has almost zero return. Wasted money. At least the moon has helium gas in its crust. And it's close. We can make money off of that. These Spacex videos are 90% renders. Dreaming. Fix earth. Man can do it with God's help. Oh well. Won't happen. God will restore order on earth. Not man. Spacex won't do crap to save man.

What does it matter what his internal motivations are. He is accomplishing things. Some will fail, some will succeed. Again, it's as simple as that, just on a larger scale. Somebody invented a can opener and started producing them. Musk "invented" a viable electric car and a spaceship and started producing them. It's his life, liberty and happiness. I don't idolize him or demonize him and I think you all hate people that are rich, confident and motivated. To me, they inspire other people to do the same. And I don't see the downside of that.

Even though titanium is a bit lighter and stronger, its more expensive than stainless steel and not as easily moulded, stainless steel is better for mass production, price and faster colonization despite those minor differences. Obviously there would be more differences than that, however this is what I could find in a short amount of time.

@SpaceToast Gaming I've been all over and in my mid fifties. I've seen and interacted on a quantum level with many operating antigrav craft. I never witnessed a rocket blast off besides good ole 4th of July celebrations. I know rockets are real and I've seen the Akadian/Babaloyn coin with the detailed gantry. I understand according to the Sky people that made us used rockets but the need for heavy lifting spurned much development in antigrav which was at first more of an assist. The Germans experimented with antigrav and finally mastered it after discovering working craft under the ice in Antartica. The Roswel crash in 1947 was a NAZI observation craft from Antartica. There are videos of them DARPA kids floating on the aluminium balsa wood framed triange back in the 90s. Most developed Countries have high speed maglev trains. The TR3Bs are well researched and even seen on the latest released Navy videos. Bees do it by tones. I was in Phoenix back when the lights happened. That thing was huge. Rockets and things like the space shuttle are just a show so folks will be convinced of technological limitations. That's all good and its understandable. Hey man was just yanking your chan a little. Bless your heart and have a great day.

Elon Musk fanboys are the dumbest of humans on this planet. I hope Elon builds 1000's of those and fire them towards Mars all at once so he can spare us from those idiots. You can literally put The Jetsons on tv and watch it, its same level of delusion to think that cartoon is real as it is to think Elon's ideas are real. I mean it doesnt take a genius: Hyperloop: Elon promises: levitating capsule travelling 750mph in low pressure tube Elon delivers: NOTHING Loop: Elon promisses: automated pods traveling 250mph in network of tunnels Elon delivers: sewer pipe with LED lights where taxi drivers take people for thrilling 30mph ride. Boring company: Elon promises: tunnels build 100 times cheaper and 10 times faster Elon delivers: 2 mile long sewer pipe after 2 years of drilling at average cost it takes other companies to drill similar tunnel Tesla Semi Truck: Elon promises: cheaper than rail, faster than sport cars and more practical than anything else truck by 2019. Elon delivers: NOTHING This is also a man who claimed that in near future he will be able to send people to Mars at cost of less than $500k and maybe even $100k. So just in case someone thinks its possible the same person charges $55 million to send one person into low earth orbit. Low earth orbit is few hundred km from earth surface, Mars on average is more than 200 million km 🤦‍♂️ Same dude claims he will be transporting people half way around the globe in his reusable rockets in under 40 mins by the end of decade 🤣🤣🤣 just imagine the speeds he needs to get up to, around 35.000kmh 🤣🤣🤣🤣 Its amazing people believe in anything that comes out of this guy mouth. By now i wouldnt be surprised if he said tomorrow that by year 2024 he will send 1000 people starahip to Neptune 🤣🤣🤣🤣 and all them donkeys wouldnt even dare to question this idea. Three different countries send satelites and rovers to Mars just last year. Meanwhile Musk cant land his dust bins on earth with decent success rate 🤣🤣🤣

You forgot to mention that "each starship could take 100 people to Mars" a person consumes about 552 kilos of food in 10 months, we multiply it by 100 and it gives you 55,200 kilograms or 55.2 tons a person consumes 2 liters of water a day, for 100 and it gives you 200 liters a day or 200 kilograms, we multiply it by 31 (a month) and it gives you 6,200 kilos a month, that times 10 and it gives you 62,000 kilos or 62 tons We add all this up and it gives you 117.2 tons more than the starship can carry assuming they won't need anything when they get to Mars. elon and his fans, the worst thing that could have happened in the space community

@zedfan4598 That’s why they are refueling in atmosphere they don’t need to burn all of there fuel the way there they just need to cost and burn when they have to. Also they don’t need micro gravity think about the people on ISS they don’t have gravity. Cosmic rays that is a issue and they are working on it the micro meteors the hulls are going to be thick enough to survive the flight the starships we are seeing be tested now aren’t the ones that are going to take us to Mars those ones are gonna be majorly ugraded
