I really get tried of people giving the car wizard bullshit over his pricing. I am a network engineer and people go network wizzard please make sure my network does not get ransomware or please keep my employees from goofying off or please configure this random piece of equipment and then not all but some get upset when I hand them a bill for 2 hours of my time or what ever it is and they get upset and they know my rate is 120 dollars and I am upfront with them on how long it going to take. I have a honest mechcanic like the car wizard here in my home town. I dont question his rates because like me he stands by his work and like me have a business to run. If you can do it in your driveway great your not the type of person who is running a business and if something else breaks even if it not your fault you are not going to go back to yourself and say well you broke this now fix it. Sorry as someone in a service industry I stand by my work and I have nothing against people who do there own work but stop being back seat quaterbacks it stupid and annoying.

I am worried about you Car Wizard. You have a fatal flaw liking pommy engineering. I have a studied aversion to this sort of over engineering for little benefit. Plastic bits are just designed to break for extra spare parts $$. No modern car is completely without awkward bits but why does the alternator bracket have to carry oil, a structural bit that is guaranteed to leak due to normal expansion and contraction on joints? I have an appreciation of my Kia that has almost plebian engineering but it has had 7 years trouble free thanks to solid engineering chops rather than loading up with buzzword technology that is almost fully disposable when it breaks.

My wife and I decided to get rid of the car notes and buy used cars. She wanted a BMW or Benz like most women. I said hell no because I knew better. I purchase her a silver 1998 Lexus GS 400 with 207000 miles for $2200 no rust, leaks or rips with grey leather interior and chrome rims. I purchase a timing belt kit including the water pump for $200 from Rock Auto and my mechanic charge me $550 for the labor. I also replaced all the ball joints and tie rods and shocks. My wife loves her car. She said it's the best car she ever had. We have driven it from Tampa to Atlanta and back five times with no problems and it ride better than any new car.

For an automotive repair shop owner, a repair bill that is mostly (nearly all) labor is a CR nightmare. If I were wizard, I would ban marques that build cars like this, just as he has. He picked a great example as it demonstrates truly terrible engineering (running engine oil through the alternator bracket).

I still feel Wizard is off on hating BMW. Having just finished this job on my Z3 6 cylinder, $600 is fair price. It took a long time because l cleaned everything as l disassembled. Removed radiator to clean it after 21 years of driving and cleaned off most of grime on engine. Air ducts to alternator had grit and leaves in it. Useless if clogged and l removed it totally. All nuts and bolts came off nicely. Later l removed fender liner to clean and it was a mess. At least a cup of sand and mulch. Time consuming but satisfying. I love my manual shift Z3

BMWs are well engineering cars. They know the plastic ingredients very well so they make sure their cars are going to break down after 5 years. All plastic are so crispy by that time. With all parts are falling apart, the company is telling you it's the time to get a new one. That's how the company keeps the business rolling. Luxury is not affordable; affordable is not luxury. If you want to enjoy the luxury, you need to keep making payments to them.

Of all the things he could've said, the oilfilter housing gasket was his complain? Come on, that thing is done in like 30-40minutes. No matter how hard the place is to get, there's no such thing as an eternal gasket, it's bound to fail at some point. And it's literally called oilfilter housing, it's not an alternator bracket. Also, uninstalling the alternator is stupidly easy on these engines. No need to disassemble the whole cooling assembly in the front... That fact, that the gasket itself is cheap to buy, doesn't imply that it should also be easy to reach. I mean, piston rings are also dirt-cheap, yea, good look changing them "fast and easy". Also, the oilfilter housing gasket usually lasts for 10-20 years... So it's not that much of a problem either... As a long time BMW owner, I'm always amazed at how easy those cars are to fix and how easy it is to get your hands on useful information for spare parts and diagnostics etc. BUT the plastic on BMW's is a joke. on any 10 year+ BMW, I can guarantee you, any piece of plastic that you touch will disintegrate itself into 1000 pieces. I continuously get nightmares about plastic crap failing on my BMW 🤣 Also, while the cars are reliable as in "it will get you from A to B, somehow" and "the engine is bulletproof". Those cars are as unreliable as it gets, if we're talking about "never had any problems with it". Ask any E46/ E39/ E38 owner, they will be able to tell you a story about every single part of the car. (it won't be a happy story though) There's NOT A SINGLE PIECE on those cars that is not known for some kind of failure. Still, I'm in love with these cars. As someone who's able to fiy their own cars, BMW's feel like heaven. Every repair is extremely easy (doesn't mean that it's a quick fix, but it's easy). It just makes fun to fix those. On the other hand, there are brands like Ford, Audi and Renault which basically tell you to go fuck yourself if you have to fix a damn lightbulb on your car. I had a Ford Cougar where you had to lower the whole front support carrier in order to change the wishbones. Now, one might say, come on, that's not too bad with a lift and proper tools. Yea, except, that ford decided to make the front carrier adjustable. So afterwards the car needs to be aligned on a special rig which allows you to realign the front carrier. Oh wait, did I tell you, that you have to take out the front wishbones in order to change the struts as well? So basically anything other then changing your brake pads required you to lower the front carrier... Yea,... Fkn stupid car. But it was as reliable as it gets, even on long roadtrips across Europe. Never had any issues with it, if I just hadn't crashed the car into the sidewalk. (which required me to change the wishbones and struts)

Yeah because that garbage m54b25 is so reliable, eats oil like crazy, vanos seals get rock hard, vanos bearings, even my n54 is more reliable. Also the newer engines oil filter housing are not the alternator bracket. I still hate the design but it's much better. Also that auto e46, how I know it's auto is the mechanical fan was only auto and m3, currently the n52 is the most reliable, easier to work on and just as cheap. Huge misconception BMW is expensive. That's not to mention the easiest electrical system to work on. Simple protocols, android device and a k&d cable gives you more power then the dealer for $225 and your phone. Any BMW from e46 to the New 2021 g80

I loved working on that car. If you own one you have to do your own repairs. They stay in great shape. The thing that did mine in was it was my only car and the module for the door lock went out. I can say I could do most repairs repairs on the BMW than I can on my ford. Just replacing a water pump on the BMW came out so easily but the ford had bolts snap and needs about just as much work than you did for the oil housing gasket

So you're saying its her fault for driving it while it was leaking heaps of oil... and not monitoring common maintenance items on an e46. The customer is very lucky a belt did not slip. The VANOS line is usually replaced along with it. Kit is around $80. Then oil change kit is around $100. ~$180 for a diyr 2-3 hour job... yeah you may complain about his pricing, but i'd rather pay a premium for a mechanic that knows what they are doing.

The Car Wizard suggested to buy the 1997 to 2006 BMW 3-Series (E46) on the six used vehicles you should buy video, which is chosen for a teenage/young adult vehicle, but I do not think so. They should get driver training from a professional driving instructor first, before they decide which safe and smooth vehicle to buy, once they passed the road test to be licensed to drive on their own. For my suggestion regarding a used vehicle for a teenager or a newly-licensed driver of any age, a 2007 to 2009 Hyundai Santa Fe mid-size SUV with the 3.3 L V6 engine or a 2010 to 2015 Lexus RX 350 mid-size crossover, would be the best, safest vehicle in North America, because they have electronic stability control, they have a higher ground clearance and their V6 engines are a lot smoother, compared to four-cylinder engine in smaller vehicles. Thank you very much and enjoy the rest of the weekend.

Working in a home garage, it took 19 hours. Everything came out, supercharger "hoses" (aluminum), intercooler, everything. I thin marketing requires immediate application of new ideas, before the engineers have developed the "elegant solution"

In essence lovely cars but pricey to maintain and replace parts, and as this video describes that a small repair eventually becomes expensive. Alternator 3 bolts, air box literally removed in 20 seconds and don’t make that front piece look like anything extra because you didn’t need to remove it. You didn’t need to remove the fan I know from experience. The oil filter housing is 3 bolts. 8 bolts total and this WHOLE job should be 45 minutes TOP. You should charge her $50 labor and $4 for the rubber gasket. BMW chargers $140 an hour so your $600 in “one fifth the time” is a huge scam. Next time send her to me I’ll charge real prices. Your that asshole that sees a bmw logo and chargers 10 times the price. But if for example an IDENTICAL job was on a Toyota you’d charge $40 for labor. It’s true shops do this.

$600 for gasket that cost less than four dollars🤦🏻. That’s ridiculous. That’s more than ridiculous that’s Pure design failure and just add 100,000 miles. Or a little over. They should’ve use a higher quality gasket or put the part in the place where it’s more accessible and stop using cheap plastic parts. You don’t have to charge $1 million just to change out your cheap plastic parts
